Reading Disorders

Could my child's reading problem be due to a visual problem?

A reading disorder is when an otherwise normal child has below expected reading abilities for his or her age. Dyslexia is one form of disorder. Dyslexia is a disorder of language processing. Vision problems DO NOT cause reading difficulties.

The approach to reading disorders

Reading disorders are treated by considering the child as a whole, involving a team, which includes teachers, psychologists, speech therapists and doctors. Although there is no proof that any vision disorder is responsible for reading problems, children with reading disorders should have their eyes fully examined and any vision problem corrected.

Note: The need for appropriate remedial assistance cannot be over emphasised.
