What is Oculoplastic surgery
Oculoplastic surgery is the term used for a variety aesthetic, medical and surgical management of all abnormalities of the eyelids and associated facial areas.
Surgery is primarily undertaken to resolve these abnormalities in order to maintain, restore or improve function and appearance. This can include eyelid cysts and tumours, ptosis (‘droopy eyelids’), the inward or outward turning of the lower eyelid, ‘staring eyes’ (related to thyroid eye disease), watering eyes and artificial (prosthetic) eyes.
Oculoplastic surgery also relates to the eyes’ tear duct systems and orbits (deeper structures surrounding the eyeball).
