Detached retina treated successfully after 55 years

After being hit in the eye with a stone, at eight years old, a US man was left with a detached retina, and lost all sight in his right eye.

55 years later, the patient went to the New York Eye and Ear infirmary, complaining of pain in his eye, caused by a high fluid pressure, swelling and bleeding.

Doctors washed and treated the eye, after which the patient was able to report he was able to detect the source of a bright light, as opposed to being completely blind.

After this encouraging development, doctors noted the promising ‘low’ height of the retinal detachment and opted to try and re-attach the retina.

Usually, when a retina is left detached for a considerable time, the effects can become permanent, reducing any chance of vision restoration. However, doctors were pleased to announce the patient’s eyesight had been fully restored.

This amazing story is the first medical success of its kind to be reported, and has huge implications for restoring eyesight in patients who have undergone similar long-standing traumatic retinal detachment.
